The name blends Kapasitanz, an older spelling for capacitance, with bunter, meaning colorful, reflecting the device’s use of a multicolored array.

Construction and operation: A Kapasitansbunter typically comprises a panel carrying an array of small, teaching capacitors arranged in a grid. Each unit uses a color code to indicate its nominal value, and a legend translates color to farad values.
