Kanyonu

Kanyonu is the Turkish term for a canyon, a deep, narrow valley with steep rock walls formed primarily by river erosion over long geological timescales. In Turkish, the form “kanyonu” is the definite possessive, but the underlying landform is commonly referred to simply as a canyon elsewhere.

Formation and geology

Most canyons develop where a river cuts downward through rock as the land slowly uplifts due to tectonic activity. The rate of erosion depends on rock hardness, climate, and river discharge. Sedimentary rocks often reveal visible layers, while more resistant rock types can produce dramatic, sheer walls. Over time, the interaction of weathering and erosion creates a stepped or uneven profile with terraces and benches.

Morphology and ecology

Canyons typically feature steep sides, a valley floor with a stream or river, and varying microclimates that can support distinct plant and animal communities from the rim to the bottom. Canyons are favored for outdoor recreation such as hiking, rock climbing, and river activities. They can pose hazards like flash floods and rockfalls, requiring caution. Many canyons are protected as national parks or nature reserves to conserve geological features, ecosystems, and cultural heritage.
