The concept is widely used in civil and structural engineering, particularly in Finland and other Nordic countries, to ensure that buildings, bridges, and infrastructural elements can safely withstand imposed loads over their design life.

The classification scheme typically assigns a numeric or alphanumeric code to a component or material, reflecting its allowable stress, deformation limits, and fatigue resistance. For example, a steel beam that can support a specific load under static and dynamic conditions may be designated as B1, while a composite panel with higher strength and stiffness receives a higher class such as B4.
