Kanaln

Kanaln is a fictional port city in the northern region of Veridia, designed as a study in urban water management. The name derives from the regional term for canal, reflecting the city’s historical dependence on water transport.

Situated on a broad river delta, Kanaln features a grid of canals that connect residential neighborhoods with warehouses, markets, and the harbor. The old town is pedestrianized, while newer districts sit behind embankments and green spaces.

Kanaln originated as a trading post in the 12th century. Between the 15th and 18th centuries, canal construction expanded commerce. The 19th century brought industrial growth and railway links; repeated floods led to modern flood defenses in the 20th century.

As of 2020, the city population was about 70,000. The economy blends traditional shipping and milling with logistics, services, and tourism centered on canal tours, markets, and waterfront dining.

Key landmarks include the Old Canal Bridge and the Veridian Museum of Waterways. The annual Festival of Waterways features parades, street performances, and seafood markets.

Kanaln University of Engineering specializes in hydraulic engineering and environmental planning. The transport network includes ferries on the canals, a bus system, and a regional rail link.
