Kamuflering

Kamuflering, or camouflage, refers to techniques used to conceal an object or organism by blending with its surroundings, altering appearance, or misleading observers about size, shape, or movement. The concept is used in biology to explain how animals avoid predation, and in military and civilian contexts to reduce detectability.

Biological camouflage relies on several mechanisms. Background matching lets skin, fur, or scales resemble the surrounding colors and textures. Cryptic coloration suppresses conspicuous signals. Disruptive coloration uses bold patterns to break up body outlines. Countershading reduces visual cues by darker upper parts and lighter lower parts. Masquerade or mimicry can make an animal resemble an inedible object or another species. Camouflage can involve pigments, structural coloration, and behavioral strategies such as immobility.

In nature, camouflage helps predators and prey alike and is shaped by evolution. Some species employ polymorphism or seasonal changes to adapt to different environments.

In human use, camouflage aims to reduce detectability of clothing, equipment, and facilities. Military applications include field uniforms, vehicles, and nets, as well as ghillie suits and decoys. Civilian camouflage appears in hunting gear, fashion, and art, often focusing on pattern variety and texture.

Advances in technology explore adaptive camouflage, using materials that change color or pattern in response to the surroundings, and active camouflage that uses sensors and display systems to project a surrounding image onto a surface. Limitations include sensor detection, lighting, weather, and rapid changes in environment.
