Kalixälven
Kalixälven is a river in northern Sweden. It originates in the mountains of the Scandinavian Peninsula and flows eastward for approximately 400 kilometers before emptying into the Gulf of Bothnia near the town of Kalix. The river is known for its relatively wild and undeveloped character, flowing through forests and bogs. Its drainage basin covers a significant area, encompassing parts of Norrbotten County. The Kalixälven is a significant watercourse, contributing to the regional ecosystem and providing important habitats for fish and other wildlife. Historically, the river has been utilized for logging and transportation, though these activities have diminished over time. Currently, it is a popular destination for fishing and recreational activities such as canoeing and kayaking. The river's water quality is generally considered good, reflecting its relatively pristine environment. It is one of Sweden's four so-called "national rivers," meaning it is protected from significant infrastructure development such as hydropower projects. This protected status ensures the preservation of its natural state.
