Kaitsemaandust

Kaitsemaandust is the Estonian term for protective grounding, a safety practice in electrical installations that connects exposed conductive parts to the earth in order to limit the risk of electric shock and to stabilize voltages during fault conditions.

The word combines kaitse (protection) and maandus (grounding). In technical documentation and standards, kaitsemaandust refers to the protective earth path that ensures exposed metal parts are brought to earth potential, enabling fault currents to be safely diverted and protective devices to operate.

Principles and purpose include providing a low-impedance path to the earth, ensuring rapid disconnection of faulty circuits, and maintaining equipment and user safety. A protective earth conductor is typically bonded to metal enclosures, frames, and other conductive parts, and is connected to an earth electrode or grounding system.
