Kaffeehäuser are traditional coffeehouses characteristic of the German-speaking world, especially Austria and Central Europe. They function as social and cultural spaces where patrons drink coffee, read newspapers, discuss ideas, play games, and work for extended periods.

The name derives from Kaffee and Haus, indicating a house devoted to coffee. Coffee was introduced to Europe in the 17th century, and Kaffeehäuser quickly became public meeting places. In Vienna, the Kaffeehaus culture developed into a distinctive institution during the 18th and 19th centuries, attracting writers, journalists, merchants, and politicians. Similar establishments appeared in other cities of the empire and beyond, contributing to a lively public sphere.

Typical features include a wide range of coffee preparations, such as Mokka, Melange, and Einspänner, often accompanied by pastries. Service is usually table-based, and many houses display newspapers, periodicals, and chess or backgammon sets. The atmosphere tends to be conducive to conversation and prolonged stays, with a tradition of civility and certain etiquette.

Culturally, the Vienna coffeehouse is commonly cited as a symbol of a free and cosmopolitan public sphere, where ideas could be exchanged away from home or office. In 2011, Vienna's coffee house culture was inscribed by UNESCO on the List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Today Kaffeehäuser continue to operate across the German-speaking world and beyond, preserving historic interiors and continuing the practice of long, social visits, even as modern coffee shops and chains compete for customers. They are widely regarded as important venues for reading, studying, and social interaction, bridging tradition with contemporary life.
