Kaatokoneet

Kaatokoneet, often translated as felling machines or harvesters, are specialized forestry machines used for felling trees and processing them into logs. These machines are designed to efficiently cut down trees, delimb them (remove branches), and cut them into desired lengths. They are a key component of modern mechanized logging operations, significantly increasing productivity and safety compared to traditional manual felling methods.

The typical kaatokone consists of a powerful engine, a robust undercarriage for mobility in rough terrain, and a sophisticated felling head mounted on a boom. The felling head is the core component, equipped with a high-speed saw chain and often a grapple to hold the tree during cutting. Advanced models can also incorporate delimbing knives that strip branches as the tree is processed. Measurement systems within the felling head allow for precise log length and diameter control, optimizing timber recovery and minimizing waste.

Kaatokoneet operate by driving to a tree, maneuvering the boom to position the felling head, and then cutting the tree at its base. Once felled, the tree is usually pulled towards the machine, and the delimbing and bucking (cutting into logs) processes are carried out. The resulting logs are then typically stacked for collection by forwarders or other timber extraction vehicles. The use of kaatokoneet has transformed the forestry industry by reducing the physical labor required, improving worker safety by keeping operators in a protected cab, and enhancing the efficiency and speed of timber harvesting.
