Kõrvitsamajad

Kõrvitsamajad, literally translating to "pumpkin houses" in Estonian, are a unique form of seasonal decoration and temporary dwelling. These structures are crafted from large pumpkins, typically hollowed out and carved to resemble miniature houses. While often associated with autumn festivities and Halloween, they have also seen use as whimsical playhouses for children or as decorative elements in gardens and public spaces.

The creation of a kõrvitsamaja involves selecting a sufficiently large pumpkin, often a variety specifically grown for its size. Once harvested, the pumpkin is carefully cut open to remove the seeds and pulp. The interior is then cleaned and smoothed, creating a hollow space. The exterior is then carved with details such as windows, doors, and sometimes even rooflines, mimicking the appearance of a traditional house. Lights are often placed inside to illuminate the carvings, enhancing their visual appeal, especially in the evening.

While primarily ornamental, the structural integrity of a kõrvitsamaja is limited by the natural decay of the pumpkin. They are considered ephemeral structures, lasting only a few weeks before beginning to decompose. Despite their temporary nature, kõrvitsamajad are a popular folk art tradition in some regions, celebrated for their creative use of natural materials and their charming, storybook-like appearance. Their appeal lies in their ability to transform a common autumnal fruit into an imaginative dwelling, bringing a touch of fantasy to the season.
