Roofline refers to the upper contour or profile of a building’s roof as seen from the exterior. It is determined by the roof’s shape, pitch, and how it meets the walls, and it helps define the building’s silhouette, proportion, and overall massing.

Common roofline profiles include gable, where two roof planes meet at a central ridge to form a triangular end; hip, with slopes on all sides meeting at the top; gambrel, with two different pitches on each side; mansard, with a steep lower slope and a flatter upper slope; and flat or low-slope configurations used in modern designs. The choice influences the visible line where the roof meets the walls, interior ceiling height at the attic, and potential for room shapes.

Beyond slope, elements such as eaves, overhangs, rakes, fascia and soffit boards, and dormers shape the visible roofline. These features extend or truncate the roof’s horizontal line, influence weather protection, shade, ventilation, and attic or loft space, and can accentuate or soften the building’s profile.

Rooflines convey architectural and cultural meaning, reflecting climate, construction methods, and stylistic trends. Steeper pitches shed snow in cold regions; broad eaves and low silhouettes suit hot, sunny climates. In cities, roofline variation contributes to skyline character and historic identity.

Practical considerations include structural support, drainage, insulation, and maintenance. The roofline affects wind loads, water runoff, leak risk, and energy performance, and must comply with local codes and zoning rules.
