Kärnoperativsystem, often translated as "kernel operating system" or simply "kernel," refers to the core component of an operating system. It is the fundamental program that manages a computer's hardware and software resources. The kernel acts as an intermediary between applications and the underlying hardware, ensuring that different programs can access and utilize the system's resources efficiently and without interference.

The primary responsibilities of a kernel include process management, memory management, device management, and system calls. Process management involves creating, scheduling, and terminating processes, which are instances of running programs. Memory management dictates how memory is allocated and deallocated to processes, preventing conflicts and ensuring optimal usage. Device management handles communication with hardware devices, such as keyboards, displays, and storage drives, through device drivers. System calls provide a defined interface for applications to request services from the kernel.

There are two main types of kernels: monolithic kernels and microkernels. A monolithic kernel includes most operating system services within a single, large program in kernel space. This can lead to better performance but also makes the kernel more complex and potentially less stable. A microkernel, on the other hand, keeps only the most essential services in kernel space and moves other services to user space, running as separate processes. This approach offers greater modularity and stability but can incur a performance overhead due to increased inter-process communication. Hybrid kernels combine aspects of both approaches. Examples of operating systems with different kernel architectures include Linux (monolithic) and MINIX (microkernel). The kernel is essential for the functioning of any modern computer system.
