Jäälyhty

Jäälyhty, meaning "ice lantern" in Finnish, is a decorative object typically made from ice, used during winter months to illuminate outdoor spaces. These lanterns are often crafted by freezing water in a mold, usually a bucket or a larger container with a smaller one placed inside to create a hollow center. Decorations can be added to the water before freezing, such as berries, pine needles, food coloring, or other natural elements, to create colorful and visually appealing designs.

The process of making an ice lantern involves filling the outer mold with water, placing the inner mold inside, and allowing the water to freeze. Once frozen, the inner mold is removed, leaving a cavity. This cavity can then be filled with a light source, traditionally a candle. The ice itself acts as a diffuser, casting a soft and ethereal glow.
