Jäälyhdyt

Jäälyhdyt, often translated as ice lanterns, are decorative objects created by freezing water in containers to form ice sculptures that hold a light source. These lanterns are a popular winter decoration in many Nordic countries, particularly Finland, and are commonly seen during the Christmas and New Year's season.

The creation of an jäälyhty typically involves filling a mold, such as a bucket or a plastic container, with water. Various elements can be added to the water before freezing to enhance their visual appeal. These can include natural elements like pine branches, berries, leaves, or even food coloring to create vibrant hues. Some people also embed small objects or battery-operated LED lights within the ice.

Once the water is poured into the mold and any desired additions are made, the container is placed outdoors in freezing temperatures. The water is allowed to freeze solid, or in some cases, a hollow is created in the center by removing a smaller, inner container before the water is completely frozen. This hollow serves as a space to place a candle or an LED light.

When lit from within, the ice lanterns cast a soft, ethereal glow, illuminating the surrounding snow and creating a magical atmosphere. They are often placed along pathways, in gardens, or on windowsills. The natural beauty of the ice, combined with the warm light, makes jäälyhdyt a cherished part of winter celebrations, offering a simple yet elegant way to bring light and beauty to the darkest months.
