Jäähdytyssovoissa, or cooling towers, are large structures designed to remove excess heat from industrial processes, particularly in power plants and large-scale HVAC systems. They function by transferring waste heat from a water-based cooling system to the atmosphere through evaporation and convection. This process helps maintain the efficiency and reliability of machinery by preventing overheating.

Cooling towers operate on either a natural or mechanical draft system. Natural draft towers rely on buoyancy, where warm air rises through the tower, drawing in cooler air from the surroundings. Mechanical draft towers use fans to accelerate airflow, either by drawing air in (induced draft) or pushing it out (forced draft). Both methods enhance heat transfer efficiency.

The primary components of a cooling tower include the fill material, which maximizes water-air contact; the drift eliminators, which prevent water droplets from escaping with the air; and the basin, where cooled water is collected for reuse. The efficiency of a cooling tower depends on factors such as climate conditions, water quality, and maintenance practices. Regular cleaning and inspections are essential to prevent biological growth, scale buildup, and corrosion, which can impair performance.

Cooling towers are commonly found in thermal power plants, where they dissipate heat generated during electricity production. They are also used in industrial facilities, data centers, and large commercial buildings to manage thermal loads. While highly effective, cooling towers can contribute to water evaporation and may pose risks if not properly maintained, such as the spread of Legionella bacteria, a cause of Legionnaires' disease. Proper design, operation, and maintenance are critical to ensuring safety and environmental compliance.
