Jäähdytyslevyille

Jäähdytyslevyille, often translated as heat sinks, are passive heat exchangers that help dissipate heat from an electronic component to a surrounding fluid, typically air. Their primary function is to prevent overheating, which can lead to performance degradation or permanent damage to sensitive electronics like processors, graphics cards, and power transistors.

The effectiveness of a jäähdytyslevy relies on maximizing its surface area and creating good thermal contact with the heat-generating component. This is usually achieved through a design that incorporates many fins or pins. The material of the jäähdytyslevy is also crucial; metals with high thermal conductivity, such as aluminum and copper, are commonly used. Copper offers superior thermal conductivity but is heavier and more expensive than aluminum, which is often favored for its balance of performance and cost.

Proper installation is vital for a jäähdytyslevy to function effectively. A thermal interface material (TIM), such as thermal paste or a thermal pad, is applied between the component and the base of the jäähdytyslevy. This material fills microscopic air gaps, ensuring efficient heat transfer from the component to the heat sink. Without this interface, air pockets would act as insulators, significantly reducing the heat sink's cooling capability. In applications where natural convection is insufficient, active cooling methods, such as fans, are often attached to the jäähdytyslevy to force air over the fins, thereby increasing the rate of heat dissipation.
