Järnvägsöverkorsningar, also known as railway crossings or level crossings, are points where a railway line intersects with a road or pathway at the same level. They are a common feature in transportation networks and serve to allow for the safe passage of both trains and road traffic.

Various types of level crossings exist, ranging from simple farm crossings with no active protection to complex urban intersections with multiple tracks and sophisticated warning systems. The primary concern at any level crossing is preventing collisions between trains and vehicles or pedestrians.

To ensure safety, level crossings are equipped with different protective measures. These can include passive warnings like signs and road markings, or active systems such as flashing lights, audible alarms, and lifting barriers (often called gates). The type of protection typically depends on factors like the volume of road and rail traffic, train speeds, and visibility.

When a train approaches a protected level crossing, warning signals are activated, indicating that road traffic must stop and wait for the train to pass. Barriers are lowered to physically prevent vehicles from entering the crossing. Once the train has cleared the crossing, the signals are deactivated, and the barriers are raised, allowing road traffic to proceed.

The design and maintenance of level crossings are crucial for public safety. Strict regulations and standards govern their construction, operation, and upkeep to minimize the risk of accidents. Despite these measures, level crossings remain a point of potential hazard, and adherence to warning signals by all road users is paramount.
