Jännitesuojaukset

Jännitesuojaukset, often translated as voltage protection or surge protection, are devices designed to safeguard electrical and electronic equipment from damage caused by voltage fluctuations. These fluctuations can include sudden, temporary increases in voltage, commonly known as voltage spikes or surges, or prolonged periods of excessively high voltage. Such events can be caused by various sources, including lightning strikes, switching operations in the power grid, or faults within the electrical system.

The primary function of a jännitesuojaukset is to divert or suppress excess voltage before it reaches sensitive equipment. This is typically achieved through components like Metal Oxide Varistors (MOVs), Transient Voltage Suppressors (TVS) diodes, or gas discharge tubes. When a voltage surge occurs, these components exhibit a very low impedance, effectively shunting the excess current away from the protected device and safely to the ground. Conversely, under normal operating voltages, they have a very high impedance, allowing the electricity to pass through to the equipment unimpeded.

Jännitesuojaukset are implemented in various forms, from small plug-in surge protectors for household electronics to more robust industrial-grade units integrated into electrical panels.
