Juuritusmenetelmät, or rooting methods, refer to various techniques used to propagate plants from cuttings. The primary goal is to stimulate the formation of new roots on a piece of stem, leaf, or root that has been separated from the parent plant. This asexual reproduction method allows for the creation of genetically identical offspring, ensuring that desirable traits are preserved.

One common method involves placing a cutting in water. This is often effective for herbaceous plants, as it allows for easy observation of root development and provides a readily available source of moisture. However, water-rooted cuttings may sometimes struggle to adapt to soil later on.

Another widely used technique is soil rooting. Cuttings are inserted into a suitable rooting medium, which can be a mix of peat, perlite, or sand. This method often results in a more robust root system that is better adapted to a permanent soil environment. To enhance success, rooting hormones, which contain auxins, are frequently applied to the cut end of the cutting. These hormones promote cell division and differentiation, encouraging root formation.

The conditions under which cuttings are placed are crucial. High humidity is generally beneficial, as it reduces water loss from the leaves before roots have developed. This can be achieved by covering the cuttings with a plastic bag or placing them in a propagator. Adequate light, but not direct sunlight, is also important for photosynthesis. Temperature plays a role, with warmer temperatures often accelerating root development. The choice of rooting method depends on the plant species, the type of cutting, and the desired outcome.
