Juuksepallid

Juuksepallid, often referred to as hairballs, are accumulations of hair that can form in the digestive tract of animals, particularly cats. These form when animals ingest hair during grooming. While cats are the most common culprits, dogs and other furry animals can also experience hairball formation. The hair, normally passed through the digestive system, can accumulate and solidify into a mass.

Symptoms of hairballs can vary. In cats, owners might observe coughing or gagging, as if the animal is trying to expel something. Vomiting of hairballs is common, and sometimes owners find the hairball in the vomit. Other signs can include constipation, loss of appetite, lethargy, or abdominal discomfort. In more severe cases, a blockage caused by a hairball can be a serious medical emergency requiring veterinary intervention.

Several factors can contribute to hairball issues. Long-haired breeds tend to produce more hairballs due to the larger volume of hair they ingest. Older animals or those with digestive issues might also be more prone. Dietary changes, such as increased fiber intake through specialized cat food or supplements, can help promote the passage of hair through the digestive system. Regular grooming to reduce shedding is also a key preventative measure. If a pet is exhibiting signs of distress or persistent vomiting, consulting a veterinarian is recommended to rule out more serious conditions and discuss appropriate treatment or management strategies.
