Justervesenet

Justervesenet, the Norwegian Metrology Service, is the national authority for metrology in Norway. It is responsible for maintaining national measurement standards and for legal metrology—the regulation, verification, and enforcement of measuring instruments used in commerce, industry, health care, and public services. The agency ensures that measurements used in everyday life and in professional contexts are accurate and traceable to the International System of Units (SI).

Its core activities include establishing and maintaining primary and secondary measurement standards, providing calibration and testing services to laboratories and industry, and approving and verifying devices such as scales, fuel dispensers, gas and electricity meters, thermometers, and other instruments used for trade and regulation. Justervesenet conducts inspections and enforcement to ensure compliance with measurement laws and protects consumers from inaccurate measurements.

Justervesenet develops and disseminates metrology guidelines, offers accreditation and certification for laboratories, and provides technical support and training to industry, public authorities, and the public. It also coordinates with international metrology organizations to harmonize methods, participate in comparisons, and contribute to the global measurement infrastructure.

Historically and today, Justervesenet serves as Norway's central reference for measurement science and standardization. Its work underpins fair trade, product safety, environmental monitoring, and quality assurance across sectors, including manufacturing, retail, healthcare, and research.

Organizationally, the agency is a government body with a leadership director and staff of metrologists, technicians, and inspectors. It is headquartered in Oslo and operates under the jurisdiction of the Norwegian government, reporting to the ministry responsible for trade and industry.
