Juotospasteilla, often referred to as solder paste, is a crucial material in the electronics manufacturing industry. It is a suspension of fine solder particles within a flux vehicle. The primary function of solder paste is to temporarily hold electronic components in place on a printed circuit board (PCB) before soldering, and to provide the solder alloy necessary for creating electrical connections.

The composition of solder paste typically includes microscopic spherical solder particles, which are an alloy of metals like tin, silver, and copper, although lead-free alloys are now standard due to environmental regulations. The flux vehicle is a mixture of activators, solvents, and rheological modifiers. The activators in the flux clean the surfaces of the PCB pads and component leads by removing oxidation. The solvents ensure the paste has the correct viscosity for application and then evaporate during the soldering process.

Solder paste is usually applied to the PCB using a stencil, which is a thin sheet of metal with precisely cut openings corresponding to the locations where components will be placed. A squeegee is used to spread the paste across the stencil, forcing it into the openings and onto the PCB pads. The components are then placed onto the tacky paste. Finally, the PCB assembly undergoes a reflow soldering process, where it is heated in an oven to melt the solder particles, forming permanent electrical and mechanical bonds between the components and the PCB. The viscosity and particle size of the solder paste are critical factors for successful application and soldering.
