Julio-Claudian refers to the first imperial dynasty of Rome, which ruled from the establishment of the principate in 27 BCE until the end of the 60s CE. The term is a modern label that reflects the union of two prominent Roman gens, the Julii and the Claudii, whose lines were joined by adoption and marriage. The dynasty is usually said to begin with Octavian, who became Emperor as Augustus, and ends with Nero, with succession passing through a mix of bloodlines, adoption, and political maneuvering.
