Jordsløyper

Jordsløyfer, often translated as "earth loops" or "ground loops," are a key component of geothermal heating and cooling systems. These systems utilize the stable temperature of the earth beneath the surface to exchange heat with a building. Jordsløyper consist of a network of pipes buried underground.

The pipes are typically made of durable plastic and are filled with a mixture of water and antifreeze. This fluid circulates through the buried pipes, absorbing heat from the earth in winter and dissipating heat into the earth in summer. The depth and length of the jordsløyper are determined by factors such as climate, soil type, and the heating and cooling demands of the building.

There are several common configurations for jordsløyper. Horizontal loops are laid in trenches several feet deep, requiring a significant amount of land. Vertical loops, also known as boreholes, are installed by drilling deep into the ground, making them suitable for smaller lots. Pond or lake loops submerge pipes in a nearby body of water, taking advantage of its thermal mass.

The circulating fluid from the jordsløyper then transfers its heat to or from a geothermal heat pump located within the building. This heat pump then distributes the conditioned air throughout the structure. Jordsløyper are an environmentally friendly and energy-efficient way to manage building temperature, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and lowering utility costs.
