Jootmiss

Jootmiss is a traditional Punjabi folk dance that originated in the rural regions of Punjab, primarily in India and Pakistan. The term "Joot" refers to the traditional Punjabi footwear known as *jootis*, and "miss" is derived from the word *missi*, meaning "to dance." This dance form is deeply rooted in Punjabi culture and is often performed during festive occasions, weddings, and celebrations such as *Baisakhi* and *Vaisakhi*.

Jootmiss is characterized by its lively, rhythmic movements, which are accompanied by energetic folk music, including instruments like the *dhol* (a double-headed drum), *tumbi* (a string instrument), and *algoza* (a wind instrument). The dance typically involves both men and women, who move in a circular or linear formation, stomping their feet in sync with the music. The participants often wear traditional attire, such as *achkan* (a long coat) for men and colorful *lehengas* or *salwar kameez* for women, paired with *jootis*.

The dance is not only a form of entertainment but also serves as a means of storytelling, reflecting the agricultural life, love, and social customs of Punjab.
