Jokowi

Joko Widodo, commonly known as Jokowi, is an Indonesian politician and former businessman who has served as the President of Indonesia since 2014. Born on 21 June 1961 in Surakarta, Central Java, he built a business career in his family’s furniture manufacturing enterprise before entering public service. He studied at the Faculty of Forestry at Gadjah Mada University.

Jokowi entered politics as mayor of Surakarta, holding the office from 2005 to 2012, where he pursued urban renewal, improved basic services, and streamlined administration. He was elected Governor of Jakarta in 2012 and served until 2014, gaining national prominence for his pragmatic approach to governance and focus on public works, while facing the complexities of running the capital city.

In 2014 he was elected President of Indonesia, defeating Prabowo Subianto, and was re-elected in 2019 with Ma'ruf Amin as vice president. His presidency has prioritized infrastructure development, including mass transit networks, roads, and airports, along with expanding digital government services and social programs aimed at poverty reduction and health coverage. His government has sought to attract investment and improve bureaucratic efficiency, while facing ongoing policy debates on environmental stewardship and human rights.

Jokowi is married to Iriana Joko Widodo and is known for a plain-spoken, hands-on leadership style. He remains a central figure in Indonesian politics and the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P).
