Jarrutusvaiheessa refers to the braking phase in a mechanical system, most commonly in road vehicles. It denotes the period from the initiation of braking—either by operator input, such as pressing the brake pedal, or by an automatic safety system—to the point at which deceleration ceases or the vehicle comes to a stop. During this phase, deceleration is produced primarily by braking force applied to the wheels, with energy normally dissipated as heat in the brake components. In electric and hybrid vehicles, regenerative braking may contribute to deceleration, reducing energy loss and guiding how the braking torque is distributed between regenerative and friction braking.

Several dynamics influence the braking phase: brake force development, tire-road friction, weight transfer toward the front axle, and vehicle speed. Anti-lock braking systems (ABS) prevent wheel lock during the phase by modulating brake pressure, while stability control systems (ESC) may adjust braking force to maintain directional control. Heat buildup can cause brake fade if the phase lasts too long or involves high friction demand.

In testing and design, the braking phase is characterized by metrics such as deceleration rate (m/s2 or g), pedal feel, brake torque, and transition smoothness between regenerative and friction braking. It is a critical part of vehicle safety, performance evaluation, and regulatory testing, and similar considerations apply to other domains such as rail and aircraft braking.
