This resistance is typically quantified by a stiffness matrix, which relates the forces and moments acting on a structure to the resulting displacements and rotations at its nodes or degrees of freedom.

The primary goal of stiffness analysis is to predict how a structure will behave when subjected to external forces. This includes understanding how much it will bend, twist, or displace. Accurate stiffness calculations are crucial for ensuring the safety, stability, and functionality of engineered systems. Overly flexible structures may fail to perform their intended function or even collapse, while overly stiff structures can be unnecessarily heavy, expensive, or prone to brittle failure.

The methods used for stiffness analysis vary depending on the complexity of the structure and the desired accuracy. For simple systems, analytical methods based on fundamental mechanics principles may suffice. However, for more complex geometries, irregular loading conditions, or advanced material behaviors, numerical methods are typically employed. The finite element method (FEM) is by far the most prevalent numerical technique for stiffness analysis. In FEM, the structure is discretized into a mesh of smaller, simpler elements, and the stiffness of each element is calculated and then assembled into a global stiffness matrix representing the entire structure.

The results of stiffness calculations are used in various engineering applications, including bridge design, aircraft component analysis, automotive chassis optimization, and the design of any mechanical assembly where deformation under load is a critical consideration. They form the basis for dynamic analysis, buckling analysis, and stress analysis, providing essential input for further engineering assessments.
