Järjestysasteikkotieto, often translated as ordinal scale data, is a type of categorical data in statistics that represents a natural ordering of categories. Unlike nominal data, which has no inherent order, ordinal data's categories can be ranked from lowest to highest or vice versa. However, the intervals between these categories are not necessarily equal or quantifiable.

For example, survey responses like "poor," "fair," "good," and "excellent" are ordinal data. We know that "excellent" is better than "good," and "good" is better than "fair," but we cannot say that the difference in satisfaction between "good" and "excellent" is the same as the difference between "fair" and "good." Other common examples include educational levels (e.g., high school diploma, bachelor's degree, master's degree) or customer satisfaction ratings (e.g., 1-star, 2-star, 3-star, 4-star, 5-star).

When analyzing ordinal data, statistical methods that respect the order of categories are used. These include non-parametric tests such as the Mann-Whitney U test or the Wilcoxon signed-rank test, as well as measures of central tendency like the median. Frequencies and proportions of each category are also commonly reported. It is generally inappropriate to calculate the arithmetic mean for ordinal data because it assumes equal intervals between values, which is not true for this type of scale.
