The primary causes of system losses include resistive losses, also known as Joule heating, which occur when electricity flows through conductors like power lines and transformers. As current passes through the resistance of these components, a portion of the electrical energy is converted into heat. Another significant factor is core losses in transformers, which are related to the magnetization and demagnetization of the transformer's iron core. Additionally, there are dielectric losses in insulating materials and corona discharge losses, especially at high voltages.

System losses can also be influenced by the efficiency of power generation and the distance over which electricity is transmitted. Longer distances and higher power flows generally result in greater resistive losses. Utilities and grid operators strive to minimize these losses through various measures, such as using higher voltage transmission lines to reduce current, employing more efficient transformers, and optimizing grid configurations. Accurate measurement and accounting of system losses are crucial for efficient energy management, pricing, and planning of future grid infrastructure. Reducing these losses contributes to both economic savings and environmental benefits by decreasing the overall amount of energy that needs to be generated.
