Itadakimasu
Itadakimasu is a Japanese phrase commonly said before eating a meal. It is a polite expression of gratitude for the food. The literal translation of itadakimasu is "I humbly receive." It is understood to encompass thanks to everyone and everything involved in bringing the food to the table. This includes the cook, the farmers who grew the ingredients, the fishermen who caught any seafood, and even the plants and animals themselves that provided sustenance. The gesture is often accompanied by placing one's hands together in a prayer-like position, sometimes with a slight bow. While not strictly religious, it carries a sense of respect and mindfulness towards the act of eating. Children are taught to say itadakimasu from a young age as part of Japanese etiquette. It is a fundamental part of Japanese dining culture, reflecting a deep appreciation for food and the effort behind it. The phrase is not typically used for snacks or casual nibbling, but rather for a main meal.
