The term, derived from the Finnish word for “planting methods,” encompasses traditional seed sowing, transplanting seedlings, and modern high-tech approaches such as hydroponics and vertical farming.

Direct sowing, the simplest method, involves dropping seeds straight into prepared soil. It is common for annuals and cover crops, offering low labor costs but often requiring careful seed spacing and moisture management. Transplanting, in contrast, starts seedlings in a nursery or greenhouse before moving them to the field. This technique allows for better control over germination and can increase stand fertility, field uniformity, and overall yield, though it demands more labor and seedling production infrastructure.

Hydroponic systems, which cultivate plants in nutrient‑rich water solutions, provide precise control over nutrient levels, temperature, and humidity. They are especially valuable in regions with limited arable land or water scarcity and are widely used in urban agriculture. No-till and contour planting methods aim to reduce soil erosion, improve moisture retention, and preserve biodiversity.
