Delicate fabrics may require a pressing cloth or turning the garment inside out. For crisp finishes, starch or sizing may be applied sparingly.

Ironing has a long history, with devices evolving from flat irons heated on stoves to purpose-built electric irons and, later, steam irons. The practice remains widespread in households and the garment industry as a standard finishing step for many textiles.
