Ioras

Ioras are a genus of birds in the family Aegithinidae, commonly known as leafbirds. There are five species of iora, all found in tropical Asia. They are small to medium-sized birds, typically measuring between 14 and 19 centimeters in length. Their plumage is predominantly green, which provides excellent camouflage amongst the foliage of their forest habitats. Males of some species also display bright yellow or blue coloration, particularly on their heads, throats, or undersides, which becomes more prominent during the breeding season.

Ioras are primarily insectivorous, feeding on insects, spiders, and other small invertebrates. They are agile foragers, often seen flitting through the branches of trees and shrubs, probing for prey. Their diet can also include nectar and fruit, especially during certain times of the year. Their songs are generally musical and varied, often described as flutelike whistles and trills, though they can also produce harsher, more scolding calls.

These birds typically inhabit forests, woodlands, plantations, and gardens, preferring areas with dense vegetation. They are often found in the mid-story and canopy layers. Ioras are generally solitary or found in pairs, though they may form small flocks outside the breeding season. They build cup-shaped nests, usually in trees, and lay clutches of two to four eggs. The incubation period and parental care details vary slightly between species. The five recognized species are the common iora, the black-throated iora, the pale-billed iora, the Javan iora, and the Philippine iora.
