The name blends IoT with the Dutch suffix -achtige meaning "like," signaling a design space rather than a fixed blueprint. The concept envisions lightweight devices with on-device AI, interoperable gateways, and mesh networking to reduce reliance on centralized cloud services.

Core principles include edge intelligence, data sovereignty, security by design, and open standards. Systems emphasize modularity and composability, enabling upgrades and fault tolerance through distributed computation and local decision making.

Architecture typically features three layers: device layer (sensors and actuators), edge layer (gateways performing analytics), and distributed data layer (privacy-preserving processing with local aggregation).
