IoTlike

IoTlike is a hypothetical framework for interoperable Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystems designed to facilitate cross-vendor device integration, data exchange, and cloud connectivity. It emphasizes modularity, lightweight protocols for constrained devices, and open APIs to enable developers to build interoperable applications without vendor lock-in.

At its core, IoTlike envisions a tiered architecture consisting of device layers, edge gateways, and a central core service. Devices expose capability descriptions and state via a uniform data model. Edge gateways provide local processing and protocol translation, reducing cloud latency and bandwidth usage. The central IoTlike core offers registry services, device management, publish–subscribe messaging, and policy-based access control.

Communication relies on a mix of lightweight protocols and standard web technologies. IoTlike favors RESTful APIs for device management, MQTT or similar pub–sub mechanisms for streaming telemetry, and CoAP for constrained networks. Data is represented in a common schema based on JSON or CBOR, with extensions via a capability descriptor and an event model.

Security emphasizes strong, scalable identity and access control, with device authentication, mutually authenticated TLS, and role-based or attribute-based access control. Privacy-preserving features include data minimization, configurable data provenance, and auditable logs.

Adoption remains exploratory, with use cases including smart homes, industrial automation, and agriculture. Proponents argue IoTlike could reduce integration costs and vendor fragmentation if widely adopted, while critics point to governance, standardization pace, and security concerns.

Although IoTlike is not a formal standard, it serves as a conceptual reference for discussions about interoperable IoT architectures and comparative evaluation against existing frameworks such as LwM2M, MQTT, CoAP, and OPC UA.
