Inversetehtävä

Inversetehtävä, often translated as inverse task or inverse problem, refers to a class of problems in mathematics and science where the goal is to determine the causes or inputs that lead to a specific observed effect or output. This is in contrast to a forward problem, where the causes are known and the effects are to be predicted.

For example, in imaging, a forward problem might be simulating how X-rays pass through a known object to create a projection. The inverse problem would be to reconstruct the internal structure of the object from its X-ray projections. Another example is in geophysics, where the forward problem could be predicting seismic waves generated by a known underground structure. The inverse problem is to infer the structure of the Earth's interior from recorded seismic waves.

Inverse problems are often ill-posed, meaning they may have no solution, a unique solution that is highly sensitive to small changes in the data, or infinitely many solutions. This ill-posedness frequently requires the use of regularization techniques to find a stable and meaningful solution. These techniques introduce additional constraints or prior information to guide the solution towards a physically plausible or desired outcome. The development of efficient and robust algorithms for solving inverse problems is a significant area of research with applications in fields such as medical imaging, signal processing, astronomy, and machine learning.
