It refers to a family of theoretical perspectives that hold that human behavior, meaning, and knowledge arise through social interaction and communicative processes rather than being solely determined by internal traits or fixed structures.

The term draws on symbolic interactionism in sociology (as developed by thinkers such as George Herbert Mead and Herbert Blumer) and on sociocultural and constructivist traditions (including those associated with Vygotsky) that emphasize learning and development through participation in shared activities. In linguistics and education, interaktionistiske approaches emphasize learning and language development through dialogue, collaborative problem solving, and scaffolding within social contexts.

Common characteristics include a micro-level focus on everyday interactions, attention to language use, gesture, and stance, and an emphasis on social context and process. Methodologically, interaktionistiske research often employs qualitative techniques such as discourse analysis, conversation analysis, ethnography, and case studies, though mixed-method designs are also used to study interaction dynamics.

Strengths of interaktionistiske perspectives include their ability to illuminate how meaning is co-constructed and how social environments shape development and behavior. Limitations include concerns that macro-level structures, power relations, or biological factors may be underemphasized. In practice, interaktionistiske frameworks inform research and pedagogy across sociology, psychology, linguistics, education, and communication studies.
