Intenderete

Intenderete is an Italian future tense form of the verb intendere, meaning “to understand”. The word corresponds to the second person plural, formal or plural “you will understand” in English. As a verb form, it is used in contexts where the speaker predicts or asserts that the listeners will come to grasp a concept, idea, or instruction in the coming moment.

The verb intendere itself is derived from the Latin *intendere*, which combines *in-* (“into”) and *tendere* (“to stretch, to aim”), originally referring to the act of extending one’s mind toward comprehension. In Italian, intendere can function both literally, as to comprehend, and figuratively, as to intend or plan. The future indicative ending *-ete* is added to the root *intender-*, producing *intenderete* for the 2nd person plural, future form.

Usage examples include: “Quando avrò spiegato la teoria, intenderete meglio le implicazioni.” (When I have explained the theory, you will understand the implications better.) In a more formal register, a speaker might say: “Intenderete che questo progetto è finalizzato alla sostenibilità.” (You will understand that this project is aimed at sustainability.)

In contemporary Italian, the form remains standard in written and formal spoken communication. It is less common in colloquial speech, where simpler future forms such as “capirete” (you will understand) are often preferred. Nonetheless, intenderete retains stylistic value, especially in literary or rhetorical contexts where the nuance of “to comprehend” as a deliberate, intentional act is desired.
