Insulationstests

Insulationstests, also known as dielectric strength tests or high potential (hipot) tests, are essential procedures used to verify the integrity of electrical insulation in equipment and systems. These tests are performed by applying a high voltage, significantly greater than the normal operating voltage, across the insulation. The purpose is to detect any weaknesses or defects that could lead to electrical breakdown or failure under normal operating conditions.

During an insulation test, the applied voltage is gradually increased and held for a specific duration. If the insulation is sound, it will withstand the elevated voltage without allowing current to flow. However, if there are flaws such as cracks, voids, moisture contamination, or inadequate dielectric material, excessive current will flow, or a flashover or breakdown will occur. This indicates a compromised insulation system that requires attention.

The specific voltage levels and test durations are determined by relevant industry standards and the intended application of the equipment. These tests are crucial for ensuring safety, preventing electrical fires, and extending the operational lifespan of electrical apparatus. They are commonly applied to cables, transformers, motors, generators, switchgear, and electronic components.
