Inletts

Inletts are recessed cavities cut into a stock or mounting surface to accept a component so that its exterior surfaces sit flush with surrounding wood or metal. The term is most often used in gunsmithing, but it can also refer to similar cutouts in woodworking for hardware and inlays. In firearms, an inlet specifies the pocket for the receiver or action, the barrel channel, the trigger, and other hardware. The goal is a precise, tight fit that allows accurate alignment, bedding, and a clean finished appearance.

In firearms, the inletting process begins with a pattern or blueprint of the action. The stock is marked, and the pocket is removed in stages using chisels, gouges, and sometimes routers or CNC equipment. The fit is checked with the action in place; adjustments are made until the surfaces are flush and the action seats correctly. Bedding compounds may be applied to secure the action rather than relying on mechanical fasteners alone, and the barrel channel is reamed or shaped to spec.
