Inkttoepassing, in Dutch, describes the process of applying ink to a surface, for writing, drawing or reproducing images. It covers both manual techniques and automated industrial processes, and is used in fields such as publishing, packaging, textiles and electronics. The term emphasizes the interaction between ink properties, the substrate and the method of transfer.

Methods and mechanisms: Manual methods include pen, brush and brush-and-ink drawing, where the applicator controls flow and coverage. Industrial and commercial methods include offset printing, screen printing, gravure (intaglio), flexography and letterpress, as well as digital inkjet printing. In each method ink is transferred from a reservoir to the substrate via a printing element (plate, mesh, roller, nozzle array) or through direct deposition. Substrates vary from paper and cardboard to textiles, plastics, glass and metal.

Inks and properties: Inks consist of a pigment or dye dispersed in a carrier with additives to adjust drying time, viscosity and adhesion. Common types are water-based inks, solvent-based inks, oil-based inks, and UV-curable inks. The choice affects drying/curing, colorfastness, and environmental impact. Surface preparation and substrate compatibility influence bonding and print quality.

Applications and trends: traditional print runs, art reproduction, fabric printing and packaging graphics rely on ink application. In recent decades conductive and functional inks enable printed electronics and sensors. Environmental considerations include solvent emissions and recycling of printed materials.
