Security, privacy, and governance are essential due to the sensitivity of data and potential impacts on operations and stakeholders. Information systems differ from information technology in scope: IT refers to the tools and infrastructure, while IS encompasses the use of these tools to deliver information and support processes. Critics note that information systems can introduce complexity and risk if poorly aligned with goals, but when well designed, they enhance efficiency, transparency, and strategic insight.
