Informationscience is an interdisciplinary field focused on information as a resource and the systems that manage its creation, organization, storage, retrieval, dissemination, and use. It investigates how information is produced, organized, accessed, evaluated, and used to satisfy individual, organizational, and societal needs. The field integrates aspects of library science, computer science, cognitive science, linguistics, and social science, and addresses both theoretical models and practical applications.

Core topics include information retrieval, metadata and cataloging, taxonomies and ontologies, information architecture, digital libraries and archives, data curation, knowledge management, and information behavior—the ways people seek, obtain, and use information. History: The modern discipline has roots in library science; its formal development in the 20th century with the rise of information technologies and the concept of information processing; influenced by Vannevar Bush's idea of the memex, critical to information retrieval research.
