Inerie

Inerie, also known as Gunung Inerie, is a prominent stratovolcano on Flores Island in East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. It is the highest peak on Flores, with an elevation of about 2,245 meters above sea level. The mountain is located in Ngada Regency, near the town of Bajawa, and forms part of the island’s central highlands. The volcano has a symmetrical cone profile and a large summit crater that dominates the surrounding landscape. The slopes are forested from lowland to montane zones, transitioning to mossy cloud forest at higher elevations.

Geology and status: Inerie is part of the Flores Island volcanic arc on the Sunda Plate. It consists mainly of andesitic lava flows and tephra. Its activity has been limited in recent history, with no major eruptions on record in recent decades, though Indonesian authorities monitor volcanic activity.

Human use and access: The mountain is a popular trekking destination for visitors to Bajawa. Common routes begin near Bajawa and ascend through farmland, forest, and cloud forest, typically requiring a full-day ascent or an overnight summit attempt for sunrise views. The views from the summit rim include surrounding valleys and volcanic features. Local communities regard the mountain with cultural significance in various traditions and ceremonies.

Ecology: The diverse elevations support a range of habitats, from tropical evergreen forest at lower elevations to montane forest higher up, hosting rich birdlife and various plant species, including some endemic or regionally notable flora.
