IndikatorLEDs, or indicator LEDs, are light-emitting diodes used to convey the status of a system or component. They provide simple, immediate feedback to users or operators, such as power on, fault indication, network activity, or process completion. They are common in consumer electronics, industrial equipment, automotive dashboards, and control panels.

Indicator LEDs come in several form factors. The most common are single-color devices in through-hole packages such as 3 mm and 5 mm, and surface-mount packages like 0805 or 1206. Bi-color indicators use two LED dies in one package to display two colors depending on drive polarity or separate current paths. RGB LEDs contain red, green, and blue dies to produce a range of colors through color mixing. These can be used as front-panel indicators, status lights, or ambient lighting accents.

Electrical considerations include the need for current-limiting resistance. The drive voltage minus the LED forward voltage (Vf) divided by the resistor value sets the current. Typical indicator currents range from about 2 mA to 20 mA. Depending on the design, LEDs may be driven directly by a microcontroller pin, or via a driver transistor or an opto-isolator, especially when higher currents or isolation are required. Brightness and color accuracy depend on the LED's efficiency, viewing angle, and surrounding enclosure.

Durability and life expectancy are advantages, with LEDs often lasting tens of thousands of hours. Proper placement, contrast with background surfaces, and appropriate brightness levels help ensure legibility in varying lighting conditions.
