Indian American is a term used in the United States to describe a person of Indian origin or descent who is a citizen or resident of the United States. The category includes people born in India and those born in the United States to Indian parents, spanning multiple generations and a range of cultural identities.

As of the 2020s, estimates place the Indian American population at roughly 4.5 to 5 million people, making it one of the largest subgroups within Asian Americans. The community is heavily concentrated in California, New Jersey, New York, Texas, and Illinois, with large populations in the San Francisco Bay Area, the New York metropolitan area, and the Chicago area. Common urban centers include Fremont, California; Edison, New Jersey; and Schaumburg, Illinois.

Indian immigration to the United States expanded substantially after the 1965 Immigration and Nationality Act, which favored skilled workers. Earlier arrivals in the late 19th and early 20th centuries included students and professionals who faced legal and social barriers. From the 1980s onward, rapid growth occurred in technology, medicine, academia, and business, driven by demand for engineers, software developers, and scientists.

Indian Americans are diverse in religion, language, and culture. Hinduism, Islam, Sikhism, Christianity, and Jainism are represented, among others. Languages include Hindi, Gujarati, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam. The community has made notable contributions in technology, medicine, academia, arts, and public life, with leaders such as Sundar Pichai, Satya Nadella, and Kamala Harris among the prominent figures associated with Indian American identity.
