Ilmatorjuntakonekiväärit, often abbreviated as AA machine guns, are automatic firearms designed specifically to engage low-flying aircraft and other aerial targets. They are characterized by a high rate of fire and are typically mounted on stable platforms, such as tripods or vehicles, to provide the necessary aiming accuracy. While conventional machine guns can be used against aircraft, dedicated AA machine guns often feature modifications for this role, including specialized sights, higher muzzle velocities, or ammunition designed for fragmentation upon impact.

Historically, these weapons saw significant development and widespread use during both World War I and World War II, where their effectiveness against reconnaissance planes, bombers, and ground-attack aircraft was crucial. Their role shifted with the advent of more advanced anti-aircraft artillery and guided missiles, but they continued to be employed against low-altitude threats, particularly helicopters and drones, well into the late 20th century.

Modern military doctrines have largely superseded dedicated AA machine guns with more sophisticated anti-aircraft systems. However, their legacy can be seen in some modern heavy machine guns that retain anti-aircraft capabilities or in specialized vehicle-mounted weapon systems.
