They can be several hundred meters in diameter and reach heights of several kilometers. Waterspouts are similar to tornadoes but form over bodies of water. They can be categorized as fair weather waterspouts, which are generally weak and short-lived, or tornadic waterspouts, which are associated with severe thunderstorms and can be as strong as tornadoes.
