Illuminálnak, also known as the Illuminati, refers to a secretive organization that emerged in the late 18th century in Bavaria, Germany. The group was founded in 1776 by Adam Weishaupt, a professor of canon law at the University of Ingolstadt. Its original purpose was to oppose the influence of the Catholic Church and promote Enlightenment ideals such as reason, science, and secularism. Members, known as Illuminati, were required to adhere to strict secrecy, loyalty, and a hierarchical structure.

The organization quickly gained attention and faced opposition from both the Bavarian government and the Catholic Church. In 1785, the Bavarian government, under pressure from the Church, banned the Illuminati and suppressed its activities. Despite this, rumors and conspiracy theories about the group persisted, often exaggerating its influence and power. These myths were later exploited in the 19th and 20th centuries, particularly in popular culture, where the Illuminati became a symbol of a shadowy, all-powerful conspiracy seeking global domination.

The historical Illuminati was relatively small, with an estimated membership of a few hundred people at its peak. Its members included intellectuals, lawyers, and other educated individuals who shared Enlightenment values. While the group did not achieve its original goals, its legacy lives on in modern conspiracy theories, which often claim that a secretive, powerful network continues to operate today, manipulating world events from behind the scenes. These theories frequently cite symbols, organizations, or individuals as evidence of ongoing Illuminati influence, though no credible evidence supports their existence beyond historical records of the original Bavarian group.
